After working on your arms for the last three weeks, get some rest!
This is the focus of our practice for the week, Restorative or Restorative Yoga (it has two names). As you discovered last month, Restorative Yoga has incredible relaxing power. All you have to do is take just 20 minutes out of your day and relax in one of the positions we offer to measure the benefits.
Last month we introduced you to this practice so that you could better assimilate it and understand why we decided to include it in our programme.
Today we want to talk to you about the benefits. It is important to us that you understand the why and the how.
A short exercise before we continue reading; take a piece of paper and a pencil and answer these questions:
Take 5 minutes or 20 in our day, it’s great! But why am I doing it ? What challenge has this brought to my day since I started?

It’s important to keep in mind and you must have noticed that counting the days doesn’t make them go by any faster, but look back and see what you’ve already travelled with us! Day by day your new habits take their place.

Benefits of restorative Yoga
Stress management
The antidote to stress is relaxation. Relaxation is deep rest. This rest is different from sleep. Deep sleep states include periods of dreaming, which increase muscle tension, as well as other physiological signs of tension. Relaxation is a state in which there is no movement, no effort, and the brain is calm. Restorative yoga places the body in a comfortable position, paying special attention to the breath.
Peace of mind
Restorative yoga is a style of yoga that encourages physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Restorative yoga is practised at a slow pace and is for all levels, focusing on stillness and deep breathing. This style of yoga is known for its ability to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the “rest and digest” part of your nervous system that helps keep basic functions running.
Relieves tension
Restorative Yoga is known for its passive healing benefits. As the name suggests, this style of yoga “restores” the functioning of the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps the body to rest, heal and regain balance. We are talking here about both muscular tensions and psychic tensions.
Reconnect with yourself
It is normal to feel overwhelmed or stressed when life gets hectic. Instead of letting things get out of control, it is better to find balance by slowing down. Lie down on a mat and start with gentle postures that don’t stretch, but invigorate the body. Taking this time for yourself is already a great first step in reconnecting with your needs and desires. Listening to yourself is the key to connecting with yourself.
Release muscles tensions
Restorative Yoga, unlike any other Yoga practice, is meant to open. It differs because its main goal is to OPEN, not to STRETCH. It is about opening, not stretching. Restorative postures can be adapted to each of us. The postures adapt to us and not the other way around, seeking to relax the muscles and not to stretch them.
Introduction to meditation with a peaceful body
Once we are in our Restorative Yoga position without any tension. The next step is to concentrate on your breathing. Every step of breathing counts, analyse whether your breath is short or long and listen to the air coming out of your lungs. Since you are in a position where you are not physically struggling, your mind is less likely to wander. It is important to welcome all thoughts during practice. They are a natural process of the mind.
Improves sleep quality
We often hear that exercise is good for sleep. This statement is true, however when we have done too much exercise in our day, we sometimes find it difficult to fall asleep, because our body and mind are still very active. Restorative Yoga has this magical power to relax, and with a relaxed mind and body, sleep doesn’t take long to come – you even fall asleep in the full posture!
This yoga is good and gentle for everyone; pregnant women, people with back problems, people with knee or joint problems, children… This discipline does not require unusual flexibility and no particular physical ability. It adapts to everyone. Everything and it can change your life.
